We Have a New Nest – but not an Empty One!

Date: October 10, 2012 - categories: , - 16 Comments

Just outside the apartment…

This isn’t our street. Well, not exactly.

Pino and I live in the Assisi countryside but the cozy apartment we now rent, Il Nido Tranquilllo (“tranquil nest”) is in Assisi, on a charming medieval backstreet.

The “medieval” is not just outside: inside the front door, on the lower level of the building, is the medieval wash area, used by (presumably) the servant women of the palazzo centuries ago.

History wraps around you as you enter the front door of the buidlng

Upstairs, Umbria wraps around you in our apartment: Umbrian artworks and handcrafts add warmth and color to the rooms.

Come and stay.

  • Anne, congratulazioni!
I didn’t know you bought a place in town. It’s Lucinda, by the way, who came with her parents in 2010 to Calendimaggio. I miss Italy! Hoping to head there for a little shoe string trip in the fall. We’ll see!

Which one is it? Any of the ones we saw together? I had such a wonderful time last November with you and all there……..planning for next fall.

  • Wow, Anne! Once you put your mind to something, it get’s done.
Congratulations. I’m sure you’ll have lots of success with your “Nido Tranquillo”.

    Hello Anne,

I’m an architect in the USA and I am bringing my family ( husband and 2 sons ) to Italy next month. I visited Assisi in my 20s and want to return with my family for a few days. We would love to stay in your apartment, if is available and if we can afford it. We are already very anxious because of the cost of this trip, but my husband ( who is a cook and wants to experience true regional Italian cuisine ) has always wanted to come to Italy. We could stay anytime between April 1st and April 9th. We are looking for a place to spend Easter, in fact. Is there any way we could spend some time at your “Tranquil Nest?”

    Thank you,
    Tina Govan

Am thinking about a trip next year with my sister-in-law. What are your rates in spring and fall? Thanks!

  • Thanks to all for your notes and think I have checked in with each via email?
The apt now has a microwave, just been re-painted, soon to have WIFI….and offering low low “introductory” rental rates from now til March 2013!
    Thanks for passing the word!

  • Wow, Anna, Are you saying you now own an apartment in Assisi that you are going to rent out? That’s fasinating – an interesting twist. Would love to see it and/or stay in it, if we ever find a way to get back to Assisi for a while. Half our lives & our hearts do belong there, of course. So, we’ll have to make it one day.
Wishing you success in the venture.

Hi Anne, WE have two beautiful daughters who studied in Rome..and would love to teach English as a second lanquage for a month next summer..for those who might like to be tutored…Mary is currently working as a second lanquage teacher in the public school. Is it possible for them to rent your apartment as students..or might any of your friends, that you’d recommend, be interested in have them live with their families and tutor them? Mary is very versed in gluten-free cooking….if any of your friends have children with gluten allergies…

Where do I begin?? As I prepare for my trip back to the states tomorrow after 3 glorious weeks in “My Nest…..oooops, THE Nest”, my heart is warm and my love for Assisi and sweet, sweet Anne is overflowing! I now think of her apt as MY lil slice of heaven It is the perfect retreat after very full days of exploring, touring with Anne and eating my way into oblivion!
Fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, plus many of Anne’s special touches. Quiet nights, sleepy mornings! It’s just the nicest place to stay when you’re visiting Assisi…a very easy walk to anywhere in town, plus all the restaurants!!
I had such fun on her rural tour….quite a humbling experience and the wine tasting in Spello?? Well, no words to describe that one! SO MUCH FUN!
She even invited several of us to her home for a meal cooked by her and her sweetheart of a husband and their son!! I call that hospitality with a capitol “H”!!
Thank you sweets… made this part of my trip…the trip of my lifetime. I expect to see you next in Texas!!!! At my house!!

Ciao, Anne. I met you in April when I was on pilgrimage with St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, NC. I am eager to return to Assisi for a longer pilgrimage, and Il Nido is an answer to my prayers! I am interested in a 3 week stay in May or June of 2014. How far in advance do you reserve the condo? I know that you’ll have lots of pilgrims staying in your beautiful “nest”…Pace e bene, Joanne
