2012 U.S Tour: Cooking IS Communicating
I’ve been offering cooking lesssons of Umbrian rural cuisine in private homes since 1998 – when Cathleen from San Anselmo invited me to bring Umbria’s flavors into her kitchen.
I’ve never yet had a stated U.S Tour “theme” but I think that I will this year: “Cooking IS Communicating.”
Fascinating Umbrian culinary historian Nadia Marconi says it best: “Food is a language, a way of communicating… You have to put your soul into food… Aromas, flavors, colors all transmit messages – such a perfect form of communication! Let us educate our youth, our children to the flavors of food as communication.“
This year’s “theme” has always been there: all past cooking classes have drawn people together, formed new bonds, led to new ways of communication. Each one has been a joy, no matter what the location! I’ve cooked in private homes all over the country, in cooking schools in Reno and in Phoenix, in a restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin, on a Texas ranch, in schools with the little ones, in church kitchens. I’ve cooked in large, fully-equipped kitchens and in tiny ones: in a New York City apartment and in the galley-sized kitchen of a tiny Boston brownstone.
The space doesn’t matter. The bonds form, no matter what the space.
