“You have to mix a salad with your hands (clean hands)”, advised John (“Giovanni”) as he mixed together our Sicilian salad of steamed green beans, boiled potatoes, garlic and parsley at our Belmont cooking class. Leek frittata, too, was on this menu…and Giovanni headed to the burners and intrepidly – “I can flip those frittatas” – pulled it all off on his own.
Of Calabrian heritage, John wasn’t the only italiano at this class: Luisa (from Milano) was there, too, slicing and dicing, mixing and stirring as our Italian feast came together. Nada (from Croatia) handled the peppers for the antipasto, la bandiera (“the flag” – made with green bell peppers, red tomatoes, white onion). This time around, she was a participant in the Belmont class, after hosting two past classes in her home. We were in Anne and Peter’s home this year for an event which drew in past Belmont “cooks” and welcomed new ones.
My link to Belmont? I was a 2nd-grade teacher there in 1971- 72 and Anne and Peter’s daughter Katie was my student – as were the daughters of two other Belmont guests, Mary and Nancy.
So very glad we stayed connected. And after all, cooking together IS connection!
Mille grazie, Anne and Peter and all who shared in the feasting.
