After we’ve explored Assisi’s treasure, the Basilica of St. Francis, come out to the countryside with me to connect with other Umbrian treasures:
our farm friends. Our rural neighbors taught us everything when we moved to the land: where to find the wild mushrooms, where the wild asparagus sprouted in the spring, which grasses were best for the rabbits, where to find the acorns to fatten the pigs, where to wash the sheep’s wool along the creek’s banks, how to make sheep’s milk cheese, how to cook on a wood stove..and more.
Abpve all, they taught us about life. About what counts in life.
Peppe – nearly eighty – will tell you as he told us today while taking a pause from his haying: “I don’t have much but my time is my own. And after all, what are we missing?”
Niente.
Peppe’s no longer poor. He’s rich.
No one else has prosciutto as good, olive oil as pungent.
What else matters?
