Pino and I are often invited for a “simple” lunch at Peppa’s, elderly rural friend living here in the Assisi countryside – who quite simply prefers company at mealtimes.
When calling me to invite us for meal, she’ll nearly always say, “Ma non ho molto da offrirvi oggi..” (“I don’t have much to offer you today..”)
Ha!
“Not much” today? Just the usual rural goodness of Peppa:
Sometimes, one of her three sons can join in for a meal – but their various work commitments do not make that always possible. Today, her son Giancarlo was there for lunch – feasting with us…
Their olives, seasoned by Peppa, were in a dish near Gianfranco…..
…..and he soon sliced up a local salami, for tastes, too:
A tasty vegetable followed the pasta: Swiss chard stalks from Peppa’s garden, batter-fried after she had slightly cooked them:
Those strufoli for dessert – a Carnevale-time (Mardi Gras period) Umbria sweet – were certainly tempting —-
…but I chose the smallest…
For Peppa, the mimosa sweet I had bought her for March 8th, Women’s Day…
She tried to divide it with all of us to our refusals. Who had room?
Peppa’s mimosa bouquet was there near her kitchen, a gift to her on March 8th.
Viva le donne! Viva Peppa!
