Since every flower imaginable figures in Bucchianico’s astounding late May floral procession, la Ciammaichella, passion flowers must be there, too. We saw spindly branches of wild yellow broom, dangling wisteria, intertwining roses, delicate lilies, towering gardenia bushes, cherry blossom branches, sunflowers big as suns, multicolored snapdragon bunches and countless other paper floral masterpieces born on the heads of over three hundred women in medieval peasant dress serpentining gracefully through the village main piazza. Passion flowers? Did not spot them. But the “flowers of passion” myriads overwhelmed.
Women in the Bucchianico countryside contrade had been meeting six nights weekly since early January to create their kaleidoscopic floral triumphs. What passion. Floral passion.
