In Ventotene’s port, sailboats and yachts rock at anchor and swim-suited vacationers stroll the curvy walkway serpentining alongside the boats, dotted with umbrella-covered outdoor tables for lunchtime or dinnertime snacks.
Often during our stay on the magical island of Ventotene, we’ll stop at Mare Pizza for an aperitivo before a lunch or dinner.
Daughters Anna and Lucia serve at the counter the local specialties cooked up by mamma Antonietta in the kitchen along with assistant, Marcello.

Sisters Anna and Lucia serve up local specialties, all cooked by mamma Antonietta (back in the kitchen)
The taste temptations are many. Our snack might be pizza with zucchini flowers or eggplant balls (eggplant in the place of the meat) or breaded crab bites…with a local white wine on the side.
We stopped for pre-lunch aperitivo today: I wanted to see Antonietta for years ago, friend Silvana and I had rented an apartment attached to the family home. She happily posed with me for a photo to send on to Silvana.
Her message to Silvans? “Ritorna presto a Ventotene!”
I know Silvana’s ready to come back to Ventotene. Pino and I haven’t yet left…but I’m already dreaming about our return!
