As you stroll the medieval hill towns, look down as well as up: art is often on the cobblestoned piazzas and alleyways. The “Madonnara” artists re-created art masterpieces in chalk – and inspite of their appellation, the subject is not always la Madonna.
Francesco, Mexican Madonnara often kneeling on the streets in Assisi, frequently creates images of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi:
…and sometimes, Francesco’s main protagonist in his chalk masterpieces WILL be la Madonna. (A Raphael masterpiece is one of his favorites):
Another Madonnara, Francesca, creates images of Francesco, too – and not only:
The Madonna artists will have a small box for donations near their creations which adorn the streets of our medieval hill towns.
Grazie to each of them for the masterpieces on the ground.
