When I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an exciting school field trip might have been to Great America in Illinois to ride the roller coasters.
If you’re in school here in Umbria, your class field trip these days might be to learn about the Romans’ intricate art of making mosaics after viewing the astounding mosaic floor of the Roman villa of Spello.
A tidbit was unearthed in 2005 and now nearly 500 sq m. of splendor astounds visitors. Of all ages.
I visited twice this past week with friends.
There’ll be many more visits .
Once again, my mantra “only in Italy” fits: where else when digging out a parking lot might you find the splendid mosaic floor of a Roman villa?
For the photos of the students’ didactic visits and projects at Villa dei Mosaici, Spello, my mille grazie to Sistema Museo.

Ah Spello. I love you even more.
Janet, come back soon and we’ll go again together!
Come back soon….and happy to go there with you!
Just fantastic! Always something new and wonderful to discover in Italy. Spello is just so sweet…and this is icing on the cake!
So beautiful. Reminds me of the Roman villa in Sicily, though these seem even more beautiful to me.
Love,
Jane
Jane, the mosaics are wondrous – and just hope you and Jack can make a return visit soon to Spello so that we can head there together!
