For the celebration of Corpus Domini (sixty days after Easter), the floral tapestries of Spello – le Infiorate – are certainly the most famous here in Umbria. You need a full morning to stroll all the piazzas and medieval alleyways of Spello to take in the floral wonders which have taken hundreds of infioratori (“makers of the flower carpets”) all night to create.
You need only a short afternoon stroll in a couple Assisi uncrowded medieval backstreets to view the infioratori assisani creating their tapestries for the Feast of Corpus Domini:
They’ll be preparing them for the procession leaving the Cathedral of San Rufino about 6 pm – when the priest will carry the Sacred Host over the carpets, a floral welcome to Christ:
The floral creations on the walls of the Assisi homes are bellissime backdrops to the Infiorate in the medieval alleyway:
In spite of a cast on a broken right arm this year, I strolled the Assisi backstreets, taking photos as best I could with my left hand:
My stroll ended at the altar, ready to receive the Sacred Host…
Near the altar, a group was working quickly to finish their floral representation of Michelangelo’s Holy Family before the arrival of the Procession:
The Procession would conclude at a gran finale of a floral tapestry.

Mille grazie to Manuela Ciri and Ellen Dean for their photos of the Spello Infiorate.
This is absolutely amazing!!!
Your left handed photos are stunning Annie. The assisiani have created such a beautiful display this year, and how my heart sings to see Vicolo Bovi. Thank you.
