What tasty gelato just a few kilometers from medieval gem, Assisi. Ice-cream appassionati will not want to miss this short detour.
Head to an Assisi frazione (“a fraction,” i.e., a tiny suburb), Palazzo di Assisi, for a stop at Gelateria Oxy. Oxy gelato goodness is just across the street from the medieval palazzo, once a medieval fortification protecting Assisi and now restored and divided into apartments.
As a friend and I entered Oxy recently, we passed a young couple relishing their gelato during a pause from their motorcycle ride:
Inside, customers were choosing gelato flavors at the glass counter…..
…..and what a tempting (and colorful!) array of flavors!
That Oxy stracciatella (literally, “little rags” or “shreddeds”.i.e., chocolate chip) had more chocolate tidbits in it than any other one I’ve tasted:
Smiling young servers scooped up the gelato (or served caffe’ at the adjacent bar counter):
The owners – brothers Massimiliano and Filippo – have been creating their gelato goodness for forty years.
A star there is often il gusto del giorno (“the flavor of the day”) and of course, I had to try that one recently. Yogurt, almonds and orange blended in a buonissimo trio:
For my cone of two scoops, il gusto del giorno topped my usual favorite pinolata (made with pine nuts):
I just called Oxy and today’s gusto del giorno enticed: ricotta e caramello (ricotta with caramel). Tempting …..but I won’t leave the cool of our Assisi stone farmhouse in this blistering heat.
A break in this infernal onslaught is predicted for next week.
