Assisi Earthquake, 1997: Lest We Forget

Date: September 28, 2016 - categories: , , - Leave your thoughts

……and yet another fund-raiser soon coming up here in Assisi for those left homeless in central Italy’s devastating earthquake of August 24, 2016. In late September, early October, world-class jazz musicians – who often play at the famed Umbria Jazz festival each summer – will be trumpeting solidarity in Assisi ’s Cathedral di San Rufino, in the streets and in our theater in nearby Santa Maria degli Angeli in four days of musical fund-raising.

The first concert will be on September 30th, just four days after a day no one in Umbrian will ever forget: on September 26, 1997 a devastating earthquake rocked our region, causing collapse of sections of the vault of the Upper Basilica di San Francesco.

We in Umbria are linked to the people of Amatrice, Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto and the other towns in ruin, empathizing with their pain, suffering, sense of loss, feeling a strong sense of solidarity. The Umbria Jazz musical event’s title creates a play on words: Musica e (È) Solidarietà. After all, “music is solidarity.”

But read that, if you choose, as “music and solidarity.”

We’ll follow the Funk Off brass band through the Assisi medieval alleyways, applaud Paolo Fresu and Stefano Bollani, and sing along with Renzo Arbore and his band. In solidarity. Remembering September 26, 1997 here in Assisi.
