Deruta Delights Come in Twos
What better way to experience Italy than to know the artisans? Join us in Deruta to meet “an artisan duo”: creators of maiolica masterpieces and culinary artist, farm friend Giuseppa.
Kara and her family topped off their Umbria Christmas trip with a memorable “Deruta duo.”
First stop: in Deruta at a small family-run maiolica factory to learn about this ancient ceramic art for which Deruta is famous. We observed Massimo at the potter’s wheel where he’s been creating wonders since he was fourteen.
……and then on to the painters of the maiolica:
Satiated with maiolica masterpieces, we headed to Giuseppa’s farmhouse where her rural feast would satiate, too! Granddaughter Irene was there to help Nonna serve up the homemade tagliatelle (with meat sauce of their home-grown pork and veal) and roasted rabbit (raised by Giuseppa, of course).
….and Giuseppa’s desserts! Enjoyed by all:
Before we left, we all admired her elaborate, lovingly-created presepe (crib scene)
Mille grazie, Giuseppa (and Irene), for having added to this family’s Christmastime travels
