Driving east from L’Aquila, Pino and I were in search of “three sisters”, le tre sorelle.
After a wondrous trilogy of events, an elderly key-keeper – who welcomed us into his home – opened for us one of the three sorelle, a stunning Romanesque church.
And these photos capture memorable moments of our “tre sorelle” hunt:

Gran Sasso, Abruzzo mountain majesty

Majesty along our route: Assergi

S. Maria di Ronzone, one of the “tre sorelle” – closed!

Near Colledoro, a lunch stop where codfish reigns

Memorable codfish feast near a group all the way from Rome

I chose a pasta dish with codfish sauce

Three super Abruzzo cooks

S. Maria di Propezzano – the second “sorella” – closed!

S. Maria di Basciano – the third sorella (and we’d see it inside!)

Key-keeper elderly Signor Biagio will open S. Maria di Basciano for us

Signor Biagio welcomes us into his home

Signora Maria Pio and Signor Biagio open their home to us

Signora Maria Pia offers us her uccelletti cookies, typical of the area

Two stonemasons talk over the past

Signor Biagio tells us, “S.Maria di Basciano is dearer than my own home”

S. Maria di Basciano ceiling – like Maria Pia’s uccelletti cookies

The church – under restoration

Pino and Signor Biagio talk about the church’s structural issues
