All over Italy now, groups of friends and families are gathering together for pasta alla amatriciana dinners in solidarity with the ”new homeless”: the people of Amatrice and the nearby towns of Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto, all devastated by the August 24th earthquake.
Many restaurants all over Italy are offering first courses of spaghetti all’amatriciana with a portion of the cost set aside for the earthquake restoration. In some homes, friends and family gather to enjoy a feast with l’amatriciana as a main dish, all at the dinner contributing to quake restoration.
And in many an Italian town or village, the entire population unites to cook up and serve amatriciana (and not only!) at plank tables in huge tents, the dinner fees destined for Amatrice (or other central Italy hill towns damaged in the August 24th earthquake).
In early September, the benefit dinner of Rivortorto di Assisi (small frazione – or tiny suburb – of Assisi) included spaghetti all’amatriciana, roasted meats, and panna cotta (a clotted cream pudding – with chocolate or caramel or wild berries on the top).
Fee? 12 Euro. (A box at the cash register for additional donations……)
..and what a feast!
