About half of our grapes went to the birds this year. Literally. Pino picked the rest, filling two crates (about 100 kilos of grapes).
He bought a small press for our small quantity: we might have about 60 liters of wine.
It’s now maturing in the steel barrel in our storeroom. We’ll taste our new wine on St. Martin’s Day, November 11th – with roasted chestnuts. An Umbrian tradition.
Why not add our grapes to Peppa’s grapes to make wine together in her wine cellar as we did last year?
Well, last year’s “join-effort” wine stayed with Peppa.
Too sweet for us. (Read why here).
The last time we made wine with just our own grapes was in 1975, with the help of farm neighbors, Peppe and Mandina.
What memories.
We’ll raise those glasses this year’s “new wine” (vino novello) to them on November 11th. Probably at Peppa’s house. We’ll roast the chestnuts together to accompany the vino novello on her woodstsove. Then we’ll taste her new wine. And then ours, il vino di Pino.
….wonder if Pino is a good vintner…..?

I loved that 1975 vintage. Hope to get to taste this one.
