Ah, Italy, land of the endless discoveries. And although we’ve lived in the glorious region of Umbria, “Italy’s green heart,” for over fifty years, Pino and I are still continually discovering new treasures.
For his early July birthday this year, we decided to explore the Castello di Postignano in the splendid mountainous Valnerina area in southeastern Umbria.
Mozzafiato (literally, “cut your breath”) views on arrival:
We’d wandered many a medieval mountain village of the Valnerina but had never seen the Castello and I’d read an article on its recent restoration which intrigued.
Now a hotel with rooms in various ambiences of the restored fedual castle – not in one central connected location – the Castello di Postignano is a most unique and charming albergo diffuso.
Roberto Macii, Front Office Manager of the Castello, wrote me a note after our visit there.
I’d like to include it here, interspersing it with the photos I took as Pino and I explored: perhaps, the best way to give you a feel for the Castello majesty and charm.
“Nestled in the heart of Umbria, Castello di Postignano is a beautifully restored medieval village that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Dating back to the 9th century, this charming hilltop village has been meticulously preserved to retain its original character and charm.
As we explore Castello di Postignano, you’ll discover its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient stone buildings, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The castle complex operates as an “albergo diffuso” with 20 luxurious suites spread throughout the village, offering an authentic and intimate stay.
We boast two exceptional restaurants: La Casa Rosa and La Tavola Rossa, where guests can savor exquisite local and national cuisine.
Our facilities include a heated outdoor pool, a Wellness Center with relaxation and treatment areas for face and body, an outdoor fitness trail, a bocce court, and a billiard room.
Castello di Postignano also hosts thematic cooking schools, wine tastings, and features the Bottega Vini & Oli, where guests can purchase local products.
Additionally, La Bottega di Angela offers selected artisanal crafts, including a unique opportunity to attend a handloom weaving course.
Whether you are here to delve into the history, enjoy the serene atmosphere, or partake in the local events, Castello di Postignano promises an unforgettable experience.”
Does Signor Macil’s description entice?
A Canadian couple has fallen under the spell and will soon be married in the Castello.
And what a spot for a family reunion!
