Many a summer week-end, we’ll head to Lake Bolsena, in the region of Latium, not far from the southeastern border of our region, Umbria,
As we approach the town, vineyards span out along the road:
Lake Bolsena – once a volcanic crater – soon appears, the medieval fortress, Rocca Monaldeschi, perched on the hill above the town of Bolsena:
As we enter the town, the imposing fortress seems to be standing guard over all:
Just minutes downhill from the fortress, we’ll make our inevitable first stop on arrival: the Enoteca Gelateria Santa Cristina….
Although also a wine shop (enoteca)……..
…prize-winning ice-creams have made this gelateria famous:
My favorite? Prize-winner ricotta e cannella (ricotta and cinnamon) – and owner Anna Cristina well knows that, chuckling near me as I enjoyed that gelato goodness:
Pino always chooses – whenever and wherever we are in a gelateria – either strawberry and lemon or pistachio and hazelnut – and the Gelateria Santa Cristina has also won a Slow Food prize for their hazelnut, ie, nocciola. For their gelato di caffe‘, too:
This time Pino opted for fragola e limone (strawberry and lemon), served with a big smile by Ester:
Other gelato-appassionati enjoyed their gelato selections, too, whether choosing a cup or a cone for the goodness:
Anna Cristina and husband Giulio opened the gelateria 30 (or more?) years ago….and Giulio is always in back, making their buonissimo gelato artigianale:
That day, he’d made a new (for me) flavor: agrumi (citrus fruits). I noted the ricotta-cinnamon-fig one, too and had never tried that, though Anna Cristina told me that their gelateria had been offering that one for some years.
Oh, well. Another reason to return soon to the Gelateria Santa Cristina in Bolsena.
Do enjoy my talk on Lake Bolsena
