Orvieto: Winter Jazz and Winter Good Eating

Date: February 21, 2020 - categories: , , , , , - 8 Comments

It’s become a tradition now for us every December 30th: our anniversary lunch (or dinner) is always enjoyed at Trattoria del Moro Aronne, tucked away in Orvieto’s medieval backstreets.

We’re always in Orvieto for a few days at that time, taking in the joys of Umbria Jazz Winter.

In colorful photos of jazz musicians on the walls, the jazz theme backdrops the diners here in this stone-vaulted trattoria.

At the table next to ours, owner Rolanda was explaining menu choices to clients:

The Trattoria Moro Aronne menu choices always entice. And create conflicts: what tasty temptation to order?

An antipasto – a winter squash flan – tempted me as well as the chestnut/chickpea soup. Rolanda suggested I try the antipasto and perhaps simply a half-portion of the soup. I followed her advice.

Young waiter Gabriele brought us our antipasti, the flan for me and for Pino, baffo saliva e aceto pomodoro (sage-topped pork cheek in tomato vinegar):

My buonissimo antipasto was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate: a winter squash flan topped with Parmesan cream, then crowned with a pickled purple onion braid:

And then followed the soup for me and for Pino, his Trattoria Aronne favorite, a tender tagliata al rogo (literally translated, “steak at the stake”):

That soup certainly wasn’t a “mezza porzione” but irresistible.

Planning on a half-portion only of the chestnut/chickpea soup, I’d also ordered a half-portion of a pasta dish which had intrigued, spaghetti freschi con ragu di coniglio e finocchietto selvatico (homemade spaghetti with meat sauce of rabbit and wild fennel):

Pino and I could no more than simply taste that savory pasta. With a knowing grin, Rolanda kindly slipped the pasta into a take-home container for us.

No dessert for us after that feast but a surprise when we left: a bottle of wine from Rolanda.

Mille grazie, Rolanda, for your anniversary gift. We’ll be back. Soon.
