When we moved to Umbria to work the land in 1975, our farmhouse – without heat, running hot water, electricity, bathroom – rented for 25, 000 lire per month. Sound like a fortune? That would be about US $25 today.
The right price as you can see here:
Animals lived in the stalls below (la zona rustica) and upstairs (la zona casa), we had two bedrooms, a storeroom and kitchen (with large fireplace and a wood stove, our only heat sources).
But thanks to Pino’s restoration, our farmhouse now looks like this:
….and to the left of the our restored farmhouse, do note the building with solar panels on the roof,
dubbed the “casa nuova” (“new house”) by our children as we lived there while their Papa’ restored the farmhouse (“la casa vecchia” – the old house).
Our family has now returned to the restored farmhouse, living room and kitchen bath and guest room downstairs (in place of the stalls!) and bedrooms upstairs.
And “la casa nuova” has become a three-bedroom, two-bath apartment which we rent. The name…? “Casa Nuova”…..logicamente!

On that table now, Deruta maiolica dishes and goodness from our garden welcome apartment guests:
All rooms in our apartments are furnished with antique wooden furniture:
