On the evening of March 9, 2020, Prime Minister Conte officially announced a coronovirus-protection lockdown throughout Italy, meaning – basically – “tutti a casa” (“everyone stay home”).
…or as much at home as possible. I caffe will be open only until 6 p.m., hoping that an early closure will discourage evening social gatherings. Alimentari (grocery stores) and supermercati will be open as usual, though centri commerciali (shopping malls) will be closed on week-ends (again to discourage over-crowding). Museums, cinemas and schools will be closed until April 3rd “…..e poi, vediamo” (….and then, we’ll see…)
During this coronavirus lockdown, I wonder if fewer stands will open at our weekly markets here in Umbria?
I hope not. I’d rather shop in the fresh air. And what an ideal antidote to ward off a CPA (Coronavirus Panic Attack).
And besides, where else can I find such artichokes?
….or a Pino favorite, those giant olives from Puglia, spiced up with peperoncino?
…and what oranges last Friday at the Bastia market (and at what reasonable prices!):
There were even bunches of wild asparagus foraged in the woods of Sardinia:
Yes, we have to be attentive about keeping the one-meter distance from others now mandated…..
…..but let us hope the coronavirus lockdown allows us one of life’s simple joys: the outdoor market.

Those vegetables and fruits look so good! Let me know if you hear about whether the market will still be open – I want to check it out!

Are you having an early spring, looks delious and where were the tomatoes from?
Love reading your blogs!
Love the market, Artichokes are picturesque and I can almost taste those olives!
Beautiful artichokes! I’m wondering where exactly they are grown.
Fantastic photos from the outdoor market. I felt like I could just pick my own ! Ready to buy some carciofi!
Great, cheery & mouth watering post! We watch Italy go into total lockdown (at least grocery stores are open) your government protecting you while trump pretends nothing is happening & plans more huge political rallies. Will be thinking of you during these times.
