Tickled Pink in Montefalco

Date: May 14, 2017 - categories: , , , , , , , - 1 Comment

When our group of six headed to Montefalco this week for a hilltown tour, we were all “tickled pink” with an unexpected surprise: pink bicycles lined the main street, many with the bike baskets dripping pink petunias.

The “rosy” welcome of this medieval gem – famous for Sagrantino wine, textiles and the stunning frescoes of San Francesco and the treasures of the cloistered Agustinian convent – will greet the panting cyclists of the Giro d’Italia, pedaling up the hill from Bevagna to the “balcony of Umbria” on May 16th. Many of the wine shops, olive wood and textile stores had pink bicycle wheels on the wall or dangling off shop signs.

This year, the race began in Sardegna on May 5th and will end in Milano on May 28th: a route of 3615. 4 km…and since this is Italy, much of the route in torturous uphill climbs. And Montefalco is proud to be on the route – as two elderly gentlemen indicated as they showed us the local paper with article on Montefalco and the Giro d’Italia:

…and even our little trattoria welcomed us with a pink bike near our table:

NO doubt about it: those cyclists will be feeling “in the pink” as they bike uphill to Montefalco.

So sorry we missed seeing this. But Annie, being with you & the group in Spello, Bevagna & Assisi was beyond great. You show us sites & have us meet locals (including craftsmen & residents) that we could/would never meet on our own. And… OMG, the food. How do the Italians take simple & make the food sublime?
    Grazie mille,
    Sandi & Jerry Spector
