What a surprise yesterday when I stopped near Assisi for fuel: drivers – in athletic shoes! – were hosing down the Gazzetta dello Sport van, on their way to nearby Foligno to join in the Giro d’Italia.
This multiple-stage bike race – starting this year on May 5th and ending May 28th – celebrates its “100th anniversary” this year, though the first one was actually in 1909. Perhaps this is declared the hundredth anniversary as the race was not held during the two world wars….
The idea for the race was born with the pink-paged Gazzetta dello Sport as a way to increase circulation…….and all of Italy is now “tickled pink” in Giro euphoria.
As the truck drove off, I noted the slogan on the back door: “ A people of saints, poets, racers and climbers”:
