As you stroll the labyrinthine alleyways of medieval hill towns, you might see sheets, towels and clothing hanging out to dry. In our Assisi backstreets these days, white sheets flutter over the streets – painted with portraits.
Assisi artist, Claudio Carli, paid tribute to the neighborhood life of the Porta Perlici area of Assisi, painting the residents’ portraits on sheets draped over the streets. Stroll the backstreets up near San Rufino these days and you’ll run into people you know face-to-face but right above you, too, in their “sheet portraits.”

I LOVE THIS!! Where’s yours Anne?? Your portrait should be hanging there too! How creative!
So true, Judy Thomas!
Anne, what a compelling way of showing us the continuity of Assisi’s creative spirit (never-ending creative spirit)! It inspires me to get out my own oils and brushes — and clay — to respond to this beautiful and continuing creative urge.
The longer the time that passes since I’ve been away from Assisi, the more I miss being there. Maybe better said is that the longer I am away the more I feel its presence.
And of course your writings and photographs are a big influence in this!
