Feasting with Giuseppa is always unforgettable – and not just for the Umbrian goodness she cooks up, but for her ebullient joy as she welcomes guests into her Deruta farmhouse.
Starting off a Giuseppa rural banquet might be slices of the family’s prosciutto and salami, topping cheese bread baked in her outdoor bread oven. Next? Perhaps homemade pasta with meat sauce (meats raised by Giuseppa and her husband, Paolo), followed by a stew of wild boar (hunted by Paolo) and roasted meats. Then fresh vegetables from their garden, seasoned with their olive oil, their vinegar. And for dessert at a recent rural banquet, Giuseppa’s granddaughter had decorated a crostata (“fruit tart”) – of Giuseppa’s homemade jam – with a heart. Her guests (musicians) gave back with heart, surprising Giuseppa with fluted trills as she served dessert. Not surprisingly, the tears came.

Guiseppa’s meal and farm were a marvelous experience and so delicious. She, and little Jack Russell terrier Lily, welcomed us into a fabulous world of food, tradition, rural life and la familiglia. Thank you Guiseppe and Anne for showing us the delicious details of Umbrian life. Gratefully yours, Marta.
